Home DNA kits for dogs and cats have moved from novelty to mainstream in a short space of time. Swab the inside of a cheek, post the sample, and a few weeks later a report arrives listing breed percentages, coat and colour traits, and often a list of genetic variants linked to health conditions. For a mixed-breed dog of unknown origin, it can feel like finally getting the backstory.

The results are genuinely useful, but they are also frequently misread. A breed pie chart is an estimate, not a birth certificate. A health panel is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. And a clear result on a panel does not mean a pet is free of inherited disease — only that the specific variants tested for were not found.

Breed percentages are the part owners enjoy most and misinterpret most. A few principles make them easier to read sensibly. Breed information does have practical value beyond curiosity. Knowing that a dog carries significant herding, sighthound, guardian or terrier ancestry can help explain behavioural tendencies and inform how you structure exercise, enrichment and training. It also flags which inherited conditions are worth discussing, since many are concentrated in particular breed groups.

Understanding Health Screening Results

The health section usually reports each tested variant in one of three states. Clear means no copies of the variant were detected. Carrier means one copy was detected. At risk, or affected, means two copies were found. What those states mean in practice depends entirely on how the condition is inherited.

  • Recessive conditions. Two copies are needed before disease is likely. Carriers with one copy are usually healthy but can pass the variant to offspring.
  • Dominant conditions. A single copy may be enough to cause or predispose to disease.
  • Incomplete penetrance. Some animals carry two copies and never develop signs; the variant raises risk rather than guaranteeing an outcome.
  • Dose-dependent effects. For some variants, carriers show a milder version of the effect than animals with two copies.

This is precisely why a result should be interpreted with a veterinarian rather than acted on alone. “At risk” on a panel does not mean your pet is ill, and it does not always mean they will become ill. It means a specific genetic factor is present that may warrant monitoring, a change in anaesthetic or drug protocols, or simply awareness.

Where Genetic Testing Genuinely Changes Care

Some genetic findings translate directly into different clinical decisions, and these are where testing earns its keep. Drug sensitivity variants are the clearest example. Certain herding-breed lineages carry a variant affecting how some medications are handled by the body, and knowing about it in advance allows a veterinarian to choose alternatives or adjust protocols before a problem occurs rather than after.

The quality of pet genetic testing varies between providers, and the field is not regulated in the way human clinical genetics is. Some laboratories validate their panels rigorously and publish their methods; others are less transparent. Because the same swab can produce differently worded reports depending on where it is sent, it is worth choosing a provider that explains its validation process and reference population clearly.

  • Variants are breed-specific. A variant validated in one breed may not carry the same meaning in another.
