Antibiotics for Dogs and Cats: Using Them Safely at Home

At some point most dogs and cats will be prescribed an antibiotic — for an infected wound, a dental problem, a urinary tract infection, or one of many other conditions. What happens next largely takes place at home, out of sight of the veterinary team, and that is where a good prescription can quietly go wrong.

Doses get missed on busy days. A cat spits out half a tablet and the owner is not sure whether to repeat it. A dog improves after four days and the remaining tablets go into a drawer 'in case it comes back.' A well-meaning owner reaches for a human antibiotic left over from their own prescription. Each of these is common, and each undermines the treatment.

With food, if permitted

Use a small amount of something genuinely irresistible, and use the three-treat method: an empty treat first, then the loaded one, then another empty one immediately. The pace prevents careful inspection.

Direct dosing

When food is not an option, ask for a demonstration at the clinic rather than learning from a video.
