Understanding Your Pet's Blood Work: An Owner's Guide
At some point most owners are handed a printed sheet of numbers with a column of abbreviations down one side and a few figures flagged in bold. It is a slightly unnerving document if you have never seen one before, and the natural instinct is to search each abbreviation online, which usually produces a worst-case scenario within about thirty seconds. A little background makes the whole thing considerably less alarming and much more useful.
Blood work is one of the most valuable tools in veterinary medicine because it looks inside the body without a scalpel or an anesthetic. It can flag changes long before a pet looks unwell, which is precisely why it is recommended for routine wellness screening as well as when something is obviously wrong. Dogs and cats are also well practiced at hiding early illness, so objective numbers fill a gap that observation alone cannot.
This guide explains the two main panels your veterinarian is likely to run, what the major values broadly reflect, how to prepare your pet, why a flagged result is not the same as a diagnosis, and the questions worth asking when you go over the results.

Why Veterinarians Run Blood Work
There are three broad reasons, and knowing which one applies to your pet helps you interpret the conversation around the results.
- Wellness screening: a baseline taken when your pet is healthy, so future results have something to be compared against. This is the most underrated use of blood work.
- Investigating symptoms: when a pet is unwell, blood work narrows a long list of possibilities quickly.
- Pre-anesthetic testing: run before a procedure to check that organ function and blood cell counts are suitable for anesthesia.
- Monitoring: for pets on long-term medication or with a diagnosed condition, repeat testing tracks how things are progressing.
- Pre-purchase or pre-breeding checks: less common, but some situations call for them.
The value of a baseline is worth emphasizing. Reference ranges are population averages, and individual healthy animals sit at different points within them. A result at the top of normal means something quite different in a pet that has always sat near the bottom than in one that has always sat near the top. Only previous results can tell you which is which.
The Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC counts and describes the cells in the blood. It says nothing directly about organ function; it describes the cellular population and how it is behaving. Three cell lines are reported.
- Red blood cells: reported through values such as red cell count, hematocrit or packed cell volume, and hemoglobin. These relate to oxygen-carrying capacity, and low values are described as anemia.
- White blood cells: the immune cells, reported as a total and broken down into types such as neutrophils and lymphocytes. Changes here often reflect inflammation, infection, stress, or immune activity.
- Platelets: cell fragments involved in clotting. Both low and high counts can be significant.
- Cell indices and morphology: the size and appearance of cells, which can add useful detail about the cause of a change.
A CBC is often the first test to show that something is going on, even when it cannot say what. An elevated white cell count tells your veterinarian to look further; it does not by itself identify a cause. Interpretation depends heavily on the pattern across values rather than any single figure.
The Chemistry Panel
The biochemistry panel measures substances dissolved in the blood — enzymes, proteins, electrolytes, and waste products — and gives an indirect picture of how organs are functioning. Panels vary in how many analytes they include, and your veterinarian chooses the scope based on your pet's age and situation.
- Kidney-related values: commonly include urea or BUN, creatinine, and often SDMA. These are usually interpreted alongside a urine sample, since urine concentration adds essential context.
- Liver-related values: enzymes such as ALT, ALP, and sometimes GGT, plus bilirubin. Elevations indicate the liver is being affected by something rather than naming the cause.
- Proteins: total protein, albumin, and globulin, which relate to nutrition, hydration, inflammation, and liver and kidney function.
- Glucose: blood sugar, relevant to diabetes but also affected by stress, particularly in cats.
- Electrolytes: sodium, potassium, and chloride, which reflect hydration and a range of metabolic processes.
- Additional tests: thyroid hormone, pancreatic markers, and others may be added depending on the clinical picture.
Why a Flagged Value Is Not a Diagnosis
This is the single most useful thing for an owner to understand. Laboratory reference ranges are typically constructed so that around ninety-five percent of healthy animals fall inside them, which means a proportion of perfectly healthy pets will have a value flagged as out of range on any given panel. Run enough tests and a mild flag is close to inevitable.
Results are also affected by a long list of non-disease factors: recent eating, stress at the clinic, dehydration, medication, age, breed, and even the excitement of the car journey. Stress hyperglycemia in cats is a well-known example, where a stressed cat can show a raised glucose reading without having diabetes.
- Patterns beat single values: veterinarians read the whole panel together, not one line at a time.
- Degree matters: a value slightly outside range is interpreted very differently from one far outside it.
- Trends beat snapshots: a change from your pet's own previous results is more meaningful than the population range.
- Context is everything: the physical examination and history shape what the numbers mean.
Preparing Your Pet for a Blood Draw
A little preparation improves both sample quality and your pet's experience. Ask your clinic for specific instructions, because requirements vary by test.
- Ask whether fasting is required. Some panels, particularly those including glucose or lipid measurements, are more accurate after a fast — but never fast a pet without instruction, and never fast very young, diabetic, or unwell animals unless specifically told to.
- Keep water available at all times unless your veterinarian says otherwise; dehydration affects several values.
- Tell the clinic about every medication and supplement your pet receives, including over-the-counter products, as some affect results.
- Bring a familiar towel or blanket, and use a carrier your cat is already comfortable in.
- Arrive with time to spare so your pet can settle rather than being handled immediately after a rushed journey.
For pets that find the clinic stressful, ask about options in advance. Many practices can arrange a quieter appointment time, a separate waiting area for cats, or other approaches to reduce stress. Your veterinarian can advise what is appropriate for your individual pet.
How Often Should Blood Work Be Done
Frequency depends on age, breed, health status, and medications, and your veterinarian will make a recommendation for your individual pet. As a general pattern, healthy adult pets are often screened annually as part of a wellness examination, while older pets and those with ongoing conditions are checked more often.
- Young adults: a baseline panel gives future results something to be compared against.
- Middle-aged pets: periodic screening, typically at annual health checks.
- Senior pets: more frequent monitoring is commonly recommended, as age-related changes can develop gradually.
- Pets on long-term medication: regular monitoring is often part of the treatment plan.
- Before anesthesia: testing close to the procedure date is standard practice in most clinics.
There is no universal schedule, and recommendations differ appropriately between individual animals. Ask your veterinarian what makes sense for your pet rather than following a generic interval.
Questions Worth Asking About the Results
A results conversation is far more useful when you come prepared. These questions consistently produce clearer answers than asking whether everything is fine.
- Which values are flagged, and how far outside the reference range are they?
- How do these compare with my pet's previous results, if we have any?
- Could stress, recent food, hydration, or medication explain any of these findings?
- Do these results change what you found on the physical examination, or confirm it?
- What would you recommend next — repeating the test, an additional test, or simply monitoring?
- If we monitor, what signs at home should prompt me to call sooner?
Ask for a copy of the results for your own records. Having your pet's history available is genuinely useful if you move, travel, or see a different practice, and it makes trend comparison possible later.
Why Searching the Numbers Online Backfires
Typing a raised liver enzyme into a search engine produces a list dominated by the most serious possible causes, because those are what people write about. The far more common explanations — a mild transient change, a medication effect, an incidental finding of no clinical significance — are less dramatic and less represented.
Veterinary reference ranges also differ between species, between laboratories, and sometimes between analyzers, so a number compared against the wrong range can look alarming when it is entirely normal. Human ranges, which dominate search results, are not applicable to dogs and cats at all. The person holding your pet's physical examination findings and history is the only one positioned to interpret the sheet properly.
When Results Point to Something Serious
Sometimes blood work does identify a significant problem, and that is precisely what it is for. Finding a change early generally means more options and a better chance of managing it well, which is the argument for routine screening in the first place.
- Ask for the plan in writing: next steps, timelines, and what to watch for at home.
- Ask about further testing: imaging, urine testing, or a repeat panel may be needed to reach a diagnosis.
- Ask what changes at home: diet, monitoring, or medication routines may need adjusting.
- Ask about warning signs: know specifically what would mean calling sooner rather than waiting for the next appointment.
- Consider a second opinion: for complex or uncertain findings, referral to a specialist is a normal and reasonable step.
If your pet becomes acutely unwell at any point — collapse, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, sudden weakness, or any rapid deterioration — contact your veterinarian or an emergency service immediately rather than waiting for scheduled test results.

Blood work gives your veterinarian an objective look inside your pet, and it is most powerful when there is a history to compare against.
